Some of the most resolving sound at
the show came from an analog-based system. The Simon Yorke S9 turntable (12350 DM)
provided tunes for the Lavardin PO Phono preamp (7300 DM), which in turn fed the Lavardin
MAP monaural amplifiers (8860 DM). The Avalon Eclipse Classic speakers sounded
exceptionally transparent in this particular system, providing a full-range sound without
audible low-frequency bloat. This was a feat due to the rather small room dimensions,
which can cause problems in even the best demonstrations. One clear characteristic of this
setup was a detailed treble that was free of hash, grain, and all the nasties that digital
can sometimes exhibit.
In a show that highlighted a
multitude of new digital products, this system proved that we have a way to go before
analog sound is eclipsed forever.
