Can one system play music and do
home-theater sound equally well? The JMlab system pictured above and below sure can! The
full 5.1 setup consisted of the Mezzo Utopia speakers (24,000 DM per pair) used as main
left and right, Mini Utopias (12,000 DM per pair) used as surrounds, Center Utopia (10,000
DM ) and Sub Utopia II (12,000 DM). The sound was full yet detailed, and the bass was
simply incredible. Music tracks showed an uncanny adeptness at re-creating vocals, this
using only the main left and right speakers. With the full 5.1 combination cranked up, the
system came alive around the viewer, transforming the relatively small hotel room into a
close approximation of the Fresh Aire 8 video track.
This presentation proved the
viability of mixing a video system with a high-end audio setup to create a single
home-entertainment machine. We would be hard-pressed to choose which format (two channel
vs. 5.1) was the most convincing. With a system like this, you don't have to choose.
Rounding out the system was a collection of Proceed electronics, AudioQuest cables and
Vidikron video gear.
