James Taylor Live At Beacon
Theater was shown as the source of a modest home theater, to surprisingly good
effect. KEF demonstrated their new range of home-theater speakers, the Q65.2 mains (1249
DM), Q35C.2 center (599 DM), Q35.2 surrounds (599 DM), and 30B subwoofer (1799 DM).
According to a KEF representative, their Q-driver's dispersion characteristics helped make
this theater intelligible most anywhere in the room. The surround information was
presented as a subtle enhancement to the sound, rather than a focal point for the
listener/viewer's attention. With surround sound, a little goes a long way!
Also in use was the Tag MacLaren
AV-32R processor (2500 DM) and 100X5R multichannel power amplifier (3000 DM). The display
was a JVC plasma unit being fed by a Pioneer DVD player. Although modestly priced by
today's standards, this demonstration proved the viability of good multichannel music in
the home.
