Standout Room - Brinkmann
How many companies make everything for an
audio system? We mean everything -- not just the speakers and
electronics, but also the cables, line conditioner and turntable too? Brinkmann does --
and they seem to do it all very well At the end of this system's musical chain are the
Capra loudspeakers, priced at 30,000 DM per pair. They have some of the most staggering
bass extension of any modest-sized, single-box speaker Jeff Fritz and Doug Schneider have
heard. We asked the designer just how the speakers do it, to which he simply replied,
"We designed them right." The speakers can also play loud and with
dynamics that rival far larger speakers -- and they do this with incredible detail and
accuracy. At the beginning of the chain is the Balance turntable, which includes a tonearm
and tube power supply (30,000 DM), followed by the Calvin preamplifier (8000 DM) and the
Mono amplifiers (15,000 DM per pair). As we mentioned, cabling and line conditioning are
also by Brinkmann.
But this system is not just about bass and
loudness; it does almost everything astonishingly well. The Brinkmann system epitomized
the best qualities of high-end audio.
