ShowStoppers - Series 3

All prices are quoted in US dollars unless otherwise noted.

Acoustic Energy's AEGO 3 home-theater system comprises five speakers, a powered subwoofer with six channels of amplification, surround-sound processor and cables -- all for $1995 CAD. The jewel case perched on top of the processor shows how small and unobtrusive the system is. "It's the kind of home-theater system I would buy," was Marc Mickelson's take.

The most impressive-looking CD player we spied in Montreal was this Shanling CD-T100 ($3000 CAD), which upsamples to 24/96, and has a tube output stage and built-in volume control. It was billed as "the first high-end tube CD player from China."

Cary Audio used a pair of the new CAD-808 "Rocket 88" amps ($2500 each) to vertically biamp Monitor Audio Gold Reference 60 speakers ($5000/pair). The "Rocket 88" is triode/ultralinear switchable, so Dennis Had used the 20 triode watts for the midrange and treble, 40 ultralinear watts for the bass.

Two new DreamVision video products were on display in Montreal, the Optimizer line doubler/tripler and format converter (top component in top picture, $1695) and CinemaTen DLP projector ($12,000), which won't be available for another month.
