Standout Room - Tri-Cell Enterprises

All prices are quoted in US dollars unless otherwise noted.

Agreement among audiophiles is rare, but the system assembled by Canadian distributor Tri-Cell Enterprises had both Doug Schneider and Marc Mickelson calling it "the best sound at the show." An Accustic Arts Amp 1 ($10,000 CAD) drove Acapella Violin 1 speakers ($32,000/pair CAD), which combine a dynamic bass driver with horn-loaded midrange and ion tweeter. An Accustic Arts CD1 transport ($5000 CAD) fed an MSB Gold Link DAC ($2400 CAD), which sent the signal on to the well-known Hovland HP-100 preamp ($8900 CAD). Analog sound came via a Clearaudio Champion turntable/Rega RB-300 tonearm/Clearaudio Aurum Beta S cartridge combination. But the visual and sonic centerpiece of this system was the Acapella speakers, which had soaring dynamics and an exceedingly clear midrange. We listened at length to this system a couple of times, even with our reporting duties and deadlines looming.
